SJCCA Dance Audition Information
Below you will find all of the information you need to audition to be a part of the SJCCA Dance program at St. Augustine High School. Make sure you are reading the correct information under the proper title!
Auditions for 2020-2021
Did you miss the in-person audition? You can submit an audition video for late acceptance (read below)
NOTE: This option is only offered to In-Zone students
Video Requirements
(must be submitted via email to kaila.schippani@stjohns.k12.fl.us)
-Can be any genre of dance (choreographed by you or someone else), make sure you are dressed appropriately to the style of dance you are performing and that the video's quality is clear
-Must be a 30-60 second solo highlighting your very best
-Begin video by introducing yourself (state your name, grade, school counselor, and current school)

Current Student Auditions for 2021-2022
Auditions for current dance students will take place in class in early January.
Make sure you have already applied on HAC to be a part of SJCCA for the 2021-2022 school year! If you have never filled out an SJCCA application, you must do so in order to re-join SJCCA. Brick & Mortar StudentsIn class, students will be taken through various across-the floor exercises to determine growth.
Some classes, may also have days of jazz and hip hop choreography to determine pick-up skills and performance quality. 9th-11th grade students will be given a preliminary recommendation for the 2021-2022 school year by January 29th. A list will be posted by student number determining your recommendation at this time. PLEASE NOTE: most students will be recommended for their current level this early on in the year. Changes can and will be made over the 3rd and 4th quarter so never.quit.working. To be clear, Ms. Schippani rarely makes a decision to move students up or down this early in the school year. She has to be 100% sure as work ethic, attendance, grades, and ability are all factors in this decision-making process. |
Distance LearnersAll 9th-11th grade distance learners (and quarantined students) will need to submit an audition video via email by 4:00pm January 25th.
Filming Requirements: -Please film audition video horizontally in a well-lit place -Wear all black and jazz shoes. Make sure hair is pulled up and out of your face. -Video must include all required skills based on your current level (see video below). -All video auditions must begin with a slate (clearly state your name, current grade, current school, and school counselor) -Email audition video (unlisted YouTube link) to Ms. Schippani at kaila.schippani@stjohns.k12.fl.us |
Incoming Student Auditions for 2021-2022
This is the information for all students who would like to be in SJCCA Dance and are not currently.
Make sure you have already applied on HAC to be a part of SJCCA for the 2021-2022 school year! The application opens on January 8th and closes on January 29th. Once you have applied, you will need to book a time slot for your in-person audition on January 29th. Booking Link: SJCCA Dance Auditions (office365.com). After booking, you will receive an email confirmation (check your Junk Mail). Please do not book yourself twice!

In-Person Auditions: What to ExpectAll students will check in and then be led through the following exercises:
-Group Warm Up -Across the Floor (battements, saut de chats, pirouettes) -Learn a Combination -Perform in Small Groups -Q & A Session *See the video below for more specific information about our across-the-floor portion of the audition Virtual Audition InformationAll video audition videos must be submitted by 4:00pm on January 29th. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Filming Requirements-SJCCA Dance: -All protocol listed in the "virtual performance audition instructions" (above) must be followed -Please film audition video horizontally in a well-lit place -Wear attire that complies with the in-person audition requirements -Video must include the following (see audition prep video for specific arm/preparation requirements): -Slate: clearly state your name, current grade, current school, and school counselor -Battements: at least 4 alternating -Pirouettes: 2 attempts on the right and 2 attempts on the left -Saut de Chats: all 3 leaps on the right and all 3 leaps on the left with the appropriate arms. -Combination: must perform the full combination (including 2 eight counts of improv.) with music accompaniment. *Music accompaniment for your "across-the-floor" combinations is not required but you may use it. What to Wear (both in-person and virtual auditions)Below you will find the specific attire needed for our auditions:
(Please note: you will want to bring your own bottled water to the audition labelled with your name) Females -leotard (any color or sleeve length) -tights (pink or flesh-colored) -ballet shoes OR jazz shoes -mask -hair must be in a bun, if possible. If you have short hair, please pin it back out of your face Males -white t-shirt -black shorts or pants -ballet shoes OR jazz shoes -mask -hair must be pulled back out of your face What Happens After Auditions?If you have been accepted into the dance program at SAHS, the class you have been recommended for will appear on your '21-'22 schedule. Do not pay attention to the course title. The letter that comes at the end of the course code determines what level you have been recommended for based on your audition. See below for the key:
B= Beginner Dance I or IA= Intermediate Dance A= Advanced Dance If you would like to take two dance classes, you can request this via email after your schedule has been made (send request to kaila.schippani@stjohns.k12.fl.us). This option is only available to intermediate and advanced dancers. Your second dance class will be the level below what you were recommended for and will only be placed on your schedule if there is room in the class and if it fits in your schedule. Please be prepared to supply your own leotards, tights, ballet and jazz shoes once you are a dance student at SAHS. There will be an option to borrow donated items but there is no guarantee in getting your preferred size or style. Also, note there is a Fair Share Fee for the following: Beginning Dance: $150 Intermediate Dance: $150 Advanced Dance: $200 These fees are assessed to each student in that class. If you take two dance classes, you will need to pay the Fair Share Fee for both. |
